Yesterday’s Wright Stuff show featured the above topic for discussion. The panel agreed that there were some grey areas, but the intention and context of the person making that statement was crucial.
I asked my human PJ about this, and she felt that as a black person she would feel offended if someone called her a monkey, as she would feel that they were insulting her race. She acknowledged that in the past people may have referred to a naughty child as a “cheeky monkey”, but now people need to be more aware of the connotations of this “innocent” phrase.
And besides, no self-respecting monkey wants to be called a human.
