The panel agreed that there were some grey areas, but the intention and context of the person making that statement was crucial.

I asked my human PJ about this, and she felt that as a black person she would feel offended if someone called her a monkey, as she would feel that they were insulting her race. She acknowledged that in the past people may have referred to a naughty child as a “cheeky monkey”, but now people need to be more aware of the connotations of this “innocent” phrase.

And besides, no self-respecting monkey wants to be called a human. ;)
